Texas Enacts Nation’s Strongest Ban on COVID Vaccine Mandates

Payam Javan: On November 10, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill prohibiting businesses from enforcing COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

The legislation, known as Senate Bill 7, safeguards Texans’ right to make personal health decisions. The comprehensive ban is deemed the strongest in the nation, surpassing Florida’s similar law. It covers employees, contractors, and applicants, including prospective contractors and employees. Notably, medical students, interns, and fellows are also included due to an added provision.

Violating employers could face fines up to $50,000 per breach and legal action. The law allows complainants to file grievances with a state commission, which is empowered to investigate potential violations.

The bill, approved during a special legislative session called by Governor Abbott, received a 91–۵۴ vote in the state House and a 17–۱۱ vote in the state Senate.
