The White House is invoking executive privilege to keep 200 emails between Hunter Biden’s business and the office of then-Vice President Joe Biden from being released.

The emails were obtained by America First Legal, a conservative legal group, through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. The group says the emails show that Rosemont Seneca, Hunter Biden’s consulting firm, was involved in multiple White House events and that Hunter Biden’s name was used to give customers tours of the White House.

The White House says the emails are protected by executive privilege because they discuss confidential advice between the president and his advisors.

The revelation comes as the House Oversight Committee is investigating Biden family connections and allegations that while he was vice president, Joe Biden was involved in payoffs from a Ukrainian energy company that had Hunter Biden on its board.

The emails revealed by America First Legal are only part of the communication between Hunter Biden and his father when Joe Biden was vice president. The National Archives has said it has about 5,400 emails from accounts set up by now-President Joe Biden that he used to communicate under a fake name with Hunter Biden, while Joe Biden was vice president.

The White House has not yet said whether it will release the remaining 200 emails.

Here are some additional details:

  • The emails show that Rosemont Seneca was involved in a dinner for Chinese officials in 2011 that came just as Hunter Biden was embarking upon a business venture in China.
  • Other emails show Rosemont Seneca staff invoking Hunter Biden’s name to give customers tours of the White House.
  • America First Legal says the emails reveal “further evidence that there was no separation between Hunter’s private business dealings and the official business of the Obama-Biden White House.”
  • The group says the emails “call into question Joe Biden’s claims that he was never involved with, never discussed, and did not know about Hunter’s business dealings.”
  • Joe Biden has denied any wrongdoing and has said that he never discussed his son’s business dealings with him.

The White House’s decision to invoke executive privilege is likely to be controversial. Some people believe that the emails should be released in order to transparency, while others believe that they are protected by executive privilege and should not be released.

The House Oversight Committee is expected to continue its investigation into the Biden family’s business dealings. The committee has subpoenaed Hunter Biden and other witnesses, and it is unclear what evidence they will uncover.
