Oil Prices Oscillate Amid Middle East Conflict and Potential Russian Diesel Supplies

Payam Javan: Global oil prices experienced fluctuations on Monday as market participants weighed competing signals regarding supply constraints and potential new exports. The market attempted to balance the bullish pressures stemming from recent geopolitical escalations in the Middle East against bearish announcements regarding possible diesel shipments from Russia.

Brent crude futures advanced by 69 cents, reaching $105.41 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude increased by 57 cents to $92.42 a barrel. These movements reflect a market navigating complex and rapidly evolving supply dynamics across multiple key producing regions.

Tensions in the Middle East remained a primary driver of supply concerns following a series of attacks. The Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed responsibility for a strike on Riyadh’s international airport that resulted in multiple casualties, alongside further incidents reported near the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Adding to the maritime security concerns, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported drone strikes and damage to tankers in the vicinity of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. These incidents threaten to disrupt the fragile recovery in Middle East crude exports that had been observed in recent weeks.

On the supply front, market sentiment was influenced by statements from U.S. leadership regarding prospective Russian diesel exports and a potential energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. While these announcements introduced an element of potential relief, analysts noted that logistical hurdles and reduced refining capacities could limit their immediate impact on global inventories.

Meanwhile, major energy companies in the Gulf of Mexico moved to restore production following the impact of Hurricane Isaias. Financial institutions like Goldman Sachs have adjusted their price forecasts upward, reflecting a heightened risk premium amid ongoing global supply uncertainties.
