Government Open: Senate’s Late-Night Approval of Funding Extension

Payam Javan: In a bipartisan move, the Senate has approved a stopgap funding measure to avert a government shutdown, following the House’s lead.

The bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), passed 87-11 and is now awaiting President Biden’s signature.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the outcome, emphasizing the importance of bipartisan cooperation to avoid future shutdowns.

The CR, termed a “laddered” bill, will fund key government areas until Jan. 19, with additional funding extended through Feb. 2. The measure allows Congress more time to finalize the overdue 12 spending bills. The extension addresses concerns from fiscal conservatives in the House about federal spending and budgetary decision-making reform.
