Payam Javan: In a UN Security Council session on Friday, the United States exercised its veto power to block a resolution urging an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood criticized the resolution for not condemning Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attacks, calling it a “serious moral failure.” The resolution, proposed by the United Arab Emirates, received support from 13 members but faced a US veto.
Wood emphasized the need to address the root cause of violence and build a lasting solution rather than opting for an immediate ceasefire, citing Hamas’ refusal to release hostages and its ongoing threat to Israel.
