Payam Javan: The incidence of burglaries in Oakland, California, is experiencing an upward trend.

As per the most recent crime data provided by the Oakland police, there have been over 11,000 reported burglary cases since the start of this year. This marks a 44% surge compared to the same timeframe last year and is almost twice the number recorded in 2021. The majority of these incidents involve stolen cars.

Additionally, commercial burglaries have also seen an increase in the past two years. The occurrence of violent crime has risen by 12% since last year, with robberies showing a 30% year-over-year increase.

In a recent weekend, Oakland witnessed 45 robberies and 2 carjackings, contributing to what District 6 Oakland Councilmember Kevin Jenkins refers to as an “out of control” situation.
