Palestinian Prime Minister Resigns Amid Pressure for Political Consensus Post-Gaza War

Payam Javan: Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh announced his resignation on Monday to facilitate the formation of a broad consensus among Palestinians regarding political arrangements following Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The move is in response to increasing pressure from the United States on President Mahmoud Abbas to reorganize the Palestinian Authority (PA) and establish a political structure for post-war governance in Gaza.

Shtayyeh, who took office in 2019, emphasized the need for new governmental and political arrangements that consider the evolving reality in Gaza, national unity talks, and the urgent requirement for inter-Palestinian consensus. The resignation, still pending acceptance by President Abbas, may result in Shtayyeh serving as a caretaker until a permanent replacement is appointed.

The Palestinian Authority, established 30 years ago under the Oslo Peace Accords, currently exercises limited governance in parts of the West Bank but lost control of Gaza to Hamas in 2007. Efforts towards a unity government agreement between Fatah, controlling the PA, and Hamas are ongoing, with a meeting scheduled in Moscow on Wednesday. A senior Hamas official stressed that Shtayyeh’s resignation should be part of a broader agreement on Palestinian governance.
