New York’s Affordable Internet Law Upheld by Appeals Court

Payam Javan: A federal appeals court has greenlit New York’s law mandating internet service providers to offer discounted rates to low-income residents.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a prior ruling that halted the policy in 2021. The law requires internet companies to provide broadband to eligible New Yorkers for as low as $15 per month or face state-imposed fines.

Telecoms trade groups opposed the law, citing financial burdens and federal regulatory conflicts. Despite their disappointment with the court’s decision, New York legislators argue the measure is crucial for ensuring internet access, now deemed a critical utility, for low-income households.
