Payam Javan: On the evening of December 17, 2024, a 30-year-old inmate at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas was discovered unresponsive in his cell at approximately 9:09 p.m. Deputies and medical staff immediately initiated life-saving efforts, including CPR, while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical personnel. The Milpitas Fire Department and Medical Services arrived at 9:25 p.m. and transported the man to a nearby hospital for continued care.
Despite the medical team’s efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead at 10:08 p.m. Preliminary investigations by Sheriff’s Office detectives found no evidence of foul play. The man had been in custody since November 2, 2024, following his booking into the Santa Clara County Main Jail by the San Jose Police Department on burglary charges, along with multiple outstanding warrants from other counties.
The Sheriff’s Office is conducting a joint investigation into the death alongside the District Attorney’s Office and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office, as per protocol for in-custody fatalities.
