France to Withdraw Troops from Niger Following Coup

Payam Javan: In a significant announcement, French President Emmanuel Macron revealed on Sunday that France would be withdrawing its troops from Niger following a coup that occurred in the country in July. This decision marks a notable setback for French influence and counter-insurgency efforts in the Sahel region. Macron stated that approximately 1,500 troops would be pulled out by the end of the year, emphasizing that France would not be held hostage by the coup leaders.

The decision to exit Niger comes after weeks of pressure from the junta and widespread demonstrations. It is expected to raise concerns among Western nations regarding Russia’s increasing presence in Africa, particularly in light of the Russian mercenary force Wagner’s presence in neighboring Mali.

Macron clarified that France does not recognize the junta as Niger’s legitimate authority but intends to coordinate the troop withdrawal with the coup leaders to ensure an orderly transition. The French ambassador will also be recalled from Niger and return to the country shortly.

Niger had been a crucial security partner for both France and the United States until the coup, serving as a base for their efforts against Islamist insurgencies in the Sahel.
