Donald Trump Named Time’s 2024 Person of the Year for the Second Time

Payam Javan: Time magazine has named President-elect Donald Trump its “Person of the Year” for 2024, marking the second time in a decade he has received the honor. Trump, previously recognized in 2016, was chosen for his significant influence on the year’s news, as stated by Time editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs. Jacobs described Trump’s historic political comeback as reshaping the American presidency and reordering U.S. politics. Trump’s selection emerged from a field of notable figures, including Kamala Harris, Elon Musk, and Benjamin Netanyahu.

In an interview featured in the issue, Trump reflected on his 2024 campaign, calling it a “flawless” and tireless effort, with a focus on key issues like immigration, inflation, and taxes. He also shared plans for his upcoming presidency, such as pardoning January 6 Capitol breach defendants “within the first hour” of taking office, addressing government inefficiency with a new initiative led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, and implementing the largest mass deportation plan in U.S. history. On foreign policy, Trump expressed his intention to resolve the Israel-Hamas conflict but maintained skepticism about trusting any individual leader.

The magazine issue coincides with Trump’s scheduled visit to Wall Street, where the Time cover featuring him was prominently displayed at the stock exchange. As Trump prepares to take office on January 20, 2024, his plans to reshape government structure, economics, and foreign relations continue to dominate public discourse, reflecting his enduring impact on national and international politics.
