Dark Web Hackers Target AT&T: 73 Million Customers’ Data Compromised

Payam Javan: AT&T, a telecommunications giant, has suffered a major data breach affecting approximately 73 million customers, both current and former. The stolen information, including Social Security numbers and four-digit passcodes, was found on the dark web, where hackers often trade sensitive data.

AT&T is notifying affected individuals and offering credit monitoring services. Cybersecurity experts emphasize the need for better data protection measures, as the sale of consumer data creates lucrative opportunities for cybercriminals.

Despite the growing number of data breaches globally, launching massive cyber counterattacks raises questions of escalation. Giant corporations lack the resources and expertise to engage in counterattacks effectively, making it a challenging game of “Whack-A-Mole.”

Artificial intelligence is increasingly utilized in cyber warfare, highlighting the evolving nature of online security threats. Suggestions for improving security include implementing personal PIN numbers for Social Security accounts and utilizing individual biometrics.
