Celebrations and Mourning: Iran Reacts to Raisi’s Death

Payam Javan: Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declared official mourning for Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, but his death sparked celebrations among many Iranians both domestically and abroad.

On Monday, rescue teams located the charred wreckage of the helicopter that crashed on Sunday, killing Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and six others. The helicopter went down in a remote area while returning from Azerbaijan.

Raisi, 63, had been president since 2021 and was known for his harsh crackdown on dissent and protests in 2022. His role in the 1988 execution of thousands of political prisoners earned him the nickname “Butcher of Tehran.”

Despite Raisi’s death, the regime that installed him remains, noted Sima Shine, a former senior Mossad official. She told The New York Times that from Israel’s perspective, Raisi’s replacement would likely be another radical conservative, emphasizing that the president is not Iran’s most influential figure.
