Payam Javan: Authorities in Northern California have apprehended a suspect in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred in unincorporated Morgan Hill last month. On August 27, 2026, tactical and investigative units from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office executed a high-risk search warrant at a residence in Salinas, taking a 17-year-old suspect into custody without incident.
The arrest follows an intensive investigation into the July 25, 2026, incident, which took place during an unauthorized pop-up birthday party advertised on social media. The gunfire resulted in the death of one individual and left six others injured, prompting a multi-agency response to identify those responsible for the violence.
Earlier in August, local law enforcement intensified their search by partnering with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. To generate leads, the FBI offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the shooter, which significantly amplified public awareness and involvement in the case.
The breakthrough in the investigation came from community members who utilized the FBI’s digital media portal to submit numerous tips, video recordings, and photographs. According to investigators, this crowd-sourced evidence was instrumental in helping detectives positively identify the teenage suspect and secure the search warrant.
Santa Clara County Sheriff Robert Jonsen expressed gratitude to the public, emphasizing that community cooperation was vital to resolving the case. Jonsen noted that the willingness of citizens to step forward, combined with the joint efforts of federal partners and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, has brought the victims and their families closer to justice.
The juvenile suspect is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing on August 31, 2026, at the Santa Clara County Juvenile Justice Courthouse in San Jose. Due to the suspect’s minor status, authorities have withheld the individual’s name and booking photograph in compliance with state privacy laws.
