Payam Javan: The Supreme Court rejected a request for an injunction against Apple, which could have allowed iPhone apps to be distributed outside of the company’s App Store.
This decision follows a lawsuit by app makers alleging antitrust violations by Apple, which was previously rejected by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. The European Union also fined Apple for unfair trading policies related to its App Store. The rejected injunction was sought by app developers, including Coronavirus Reporter, Calid Inc., and Primary Productions LLC, who claimed Apple’s control over the App Store was monopolistic.
However, the court’s decision to deny the injunction did not provide reasons. The rejected apps included Coronavirus Reporter, which collected COVID-19 symptom data, and Bitcoin Lottery, a blockchain app. Despite the denial, attorneys representing the app developers remain committed to pursuing legal action against Apple.
