USA’s Retribution: Over 85 Targets Hit in Strikes Against Iran-Backed Forces

Payam Javan: The United States has initiated a retaliatory campaign against Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Syria, accusing them of involvement in an attack that killed three U.S. service members. U.S. forces conducted airstrikes on over 85 targets associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Quds Force, and affiliated militia groups. The strikes utilized numerous aircraft, including long-range bombers flown from the United States, and employed over 125 precision munitions. President Joe Biden stated that these retaliatory strikes would continue at “times and places of our choosing.” The targets included command and control centers, intelligence facilities, rockets and missiles, unmanned aerial vehicle storages, and logistics and munition supply chain facilities.

The response follows pressure on President Biden to address the drone attack in Jordan that resulted in the death of three Army reservists. The president emphasized a multi-tiered response without seeking a war with Iran, stating, “If you harm an American, we will respond.” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed that these strikes marked the start of the response, with additional actions planned to hold the IRGC and affiliated militias accountable for attacks on U.S. and Coalition forces. The administration informed the Iraqi government of the strikes but had no communication with Iran since the Jordan drone attack.

White House National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby highlighted the careful selection of targets to eliminate capabilities and leadership associated with the IRGC and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq. The administration blamed the attack on the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group supporting Iranian goals. U.S. troops have faced over 160 attacks since October 2023, with Iran held responsible for its continued material support to these groups. The administration did not provide details on casualties or intelligence sources used in the strikes.
