He argued that if reparations are to be discussed, the U.S. must likewise demand compensation for service members and civilians killed or wounded in regional conflicts, specifically referencing the 2000 attack on the USS Cole and casualties from roadside explosive devices.
The exchange follows statements from Iranian officials indicating progress in talks with Oman to establish new shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has previously conditioned the reopening of these critical maritime routes on several demands, including U.S. compensation, the lifting of economic sanctions, and the cessation of military threats.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei characterized the bilateral discussions with Oman as constructive, noting that agreements on shipping route maps and maritime safety mechanisms are progressing.
