Trump Administration Urges Supreme Court to Dissolve Education Department

Payam Javan: The Trump administration has formally requested the U.S. Supreme Court to permit the dissolution of the Department of Education, following a lower court’s injunction that blocked the plan. The administration argues that dismantling the department, which oversees federal education policy and funding, aligns with President Trump’s agenda to reduce federal bureaucracy and return education authority to states and local governments. The appeal comes after a federal judge ruled that the administration lacked the authority to unilaterally eliminate the department without Congressional approval, citing potential disruptions to schools, student loans, and educational programs nationwide.

In its filing, the administration contends that the Department of Education, established in 1979, has overstepped its role, imposing burdensome regulations and limiting local control. Critics, including education advocates and Democratic lawmakers, warn that dissolving the department could jeopardize federal support for low-income schools and students with disabilities, while disrupting billions in education funding. The Supreme Court’s decision, expected in the coming months, could significantly reshape the federal government’s role in education.
