Rhode Island Judge Denies Disqualification Bid Against Trump

Payam Javan: A federal district court in Rhode Island has dismissed a bid to disqualify former President Donald Trump from the 2024 presidential elections.

Chief Judge John J. McConnell rejected the complaint by John Anthony Castro, a lesser-known Republican candidate, who argued that Trump’s actions related to the Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021, constituted insurrection. This follows similar defeats for Castro in other states, with courts citing procedural reasons.

The recent ruling in Rhode Island aligns with a Nov. 21 decision by the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, rejecting Castro’s attempt to remove Trump from the New Hampshire ballot. Despite legal scholars’ differing views on Section Three of the 14th Amendment, which Castro invokes, Trump’s spokesperson considers the ruling a victory.

The disqualification issue may eventually reach the U.S.
