Regents Exam Dropped: New Pathways to Graduation in New York

Payam Javan: The New York State Board of Regents unveiled a plan to eliminate the Regents Exam as a graduation requirement, opting for more diverse pathways to graduation.

The plan, proposed by a commission, aims to enhance equity in education, focusing on critical skills and competencies. It includes a “Portrait of a Student” model and various ways for students to demonstrate proficiency beyond traditional exams. Critics fear the plan may dilute standards, but proponents argue it offers students more opportunities for success.

The proposal will undergo public forums before potential implementation, with current graduation requirements still in place for the current season. While some worry about lowering academic standards, proponents emphasize the need for equitable access to education and diverse pathways to success.
