Payam Javan: The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general has initiated an investigation into the U.S. Secret Service’s security procedures during a campaign event for former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on July 13.
The inquiry aims to assess the Secret Service’s handling of security for the event, following an assassination attempt. The incident involved Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, who fired shots from a rooftop about 160 yards away from Trump’s stage, injuring Trump and several others, and resulting in one fatality. President Joe Biden has also ordered an independent review of rally security protocols amidst heightened concerns over breach prevention.
Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle affirmed full cooperation with the investigations, pledging to enhance security measures to prevent future incidents.
