Nearly 1.7 million pounds of brown and powdered sugar sold under the Good & Gather, United, and Crystal Sugar brands have been recalled because of possible wheat kernel contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The affected products were distributed across eight states, and the recall was posted by the FDA on Sept. 21.

The recall involves approximately 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar. The FDA lists the amounts as 12,678 and 4,265 hundredweights, respectively, with each hundredweight equal to 100 pounds. Wheat is considered a major food allergen and can cause potentially serious reactions in people with wheat allergies.

Among the recalled products are 2-pound bags of Good & Gather light brown sugar and powdered sugar. The brown sugar has UPC 0 85239-08454 0, while the powdered sugar carries UPC 0 85239-08455 7. Larger products are also included, including 50-pound bags of United light brown sugar, 50-pound bags of United 6X powdered sugar, and 25-pound bags of Crystal Sugar powdered sugar.

The recalled products were distributed in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Consumers should compare both the product and its batch code with the FDA recall information. Brown sugar is listed under codes MHD26223 through MHD26229, while the powdered sugar codes vary by brand. Crystal Sugar products carry code MHD26230, and Good & Gather products use codes ranging from MHD26223 through MHD26229. United 6X powdered sugar includes codes MHD26223 through MHD26227 and MHD26229.

People with wheat allergies are advised not to consume the recalled products. The FDA notes that allergic reactions can include hives, swelling, vomiting, and difficulty breathing, and recommends seeking medical attention if symptoms develop. Consumers can generally return recalled products to the store for a refund or dispose of them safely. The FDA also advises against giving recalled products to others, including food banks or pets.
