Legal Showdown: Trump Challenges Colorado Supreme Court’s Ruling

Payam Javan: Former President Donald Trump has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled him ineligible to appear on the state’s primary ballot due to his alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021, insurrection.

Trump’s petition argues that the Colorado ruling is incorrect and calls for the Supreme Court to reverse it, posing the question of whether the state court erred in excluding him from the 2024 presidential primary ballot.

The appeal was expected, with Trump’s legal team expressing their intention to file it soon after the Colorado disqualification. The Colorado GOP had also filed a petition for immediate review in the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Colorado Supreme Court had temporarily stayed its own order until January 4, anticipating an appeal. If the U.S. Supreme Court rejects the petition by January 4, President Trump would remain on the primary ballot, as the Colorado secretary of state has a January 5 deadline to certify the ballots.
