FIFA President Gianni Infantino has lauded the 2026 World Cup as a historic success, expressing gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in facilitating the tournament. Speaking at a reception hosted by Trump at Trump Tower in Manhattan, Infantino credited the administration’s support as a key driver behind the tournament’s achievements. The event, which featured international soccer stars and the championship trophy, took place ahead of the final match between Argentina and Spain in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The 2026 World Cup marked a significant milestone as the first edition to feature an expanded format of 48 teams, with matches hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Despite initial concerns regarding high ticket prices and immigration policies, FIFA reported near-capacity crowds for all matches, with total tournament attendance projected to reach a record-breaking 6.7 million spectators. Both Infantino and Trump emphasized the sporting event’s global reach and its capacity to draw unprecedented television viewership and stadium attendance.
Alongside the sporting celebrations, Infantino addressed the United Nations to highlight soccer’s role in supporting youth mental health and fostering global unity. However, the tournament was not without geopolitical and administrative friction. Key controversies included travel restrictions that affected the Iranian national team, and diplomatic tensions between the United Kingdom and Argentina over a political banner displayed by Argentine players. Additionally, Infantino faced scrutiny for rescinding a red-card suspension for U.S. player Folarin Balogun following a personal recommendation from President Trump.
As the tournament draws to a close, the focus shifts to the final matches, including the third-place play-off between France and England and the highly anticipated championship final. Despite the various logistical and political challenges encountered throughout the event, FIFA officials have maintained a positive outlook on the tournament’s legacy. Organizers assert that the 2026 World Cup has successfully demonstrated the power of international sports to bridge cultural and national divides on a global scale.
