Payam Javan: An elderly incarcerated man with deteriorating health died while in doctors’ care at Valley Medical Center. He was being considered by the Courts for a compassionate release just days before his death.
On Monday, May 13, 2024, at approximately 4:15 a.m. two doctors entered the hospital room and conducted a medical assessment of the incarcerated person. At 4:24 a.m., he was pronounced deceased.
The incarcerated person had been in custody since 2018 on a warrant for multiple felony sex offenses and was housed in the infirmary at the Main Jail facility. While there, he disclosed he had an advanced medical condition and had a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) and a Physician Order Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) on file. On May 7, 2024, the inmate was admitted to VMC for a higher level of care, as his health declined.
The Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit initiated an investigation, according to standard protocol for an in-custody death. There has been no foul play discovered regarding this incident. The name of the decedent is being withheld until notification to next of kin.
