Congressional Leaders Reach Agreement on DHS Funding Amid Shutdown Fears

Payam Javan: Negotiations over government spending and potential shutdowns may reach resolution this week as congressional leaders announce a deal on appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed the agreement via social media, indicating that committees have initiated drafting bills for consideration. The deal, struck late on March 18, precedes a looming deadline, with members having until March 22 to pass the package. However, procedural requirements may pose challenges.

This agreement follows the passage of the first half of spending bills earlier this month, with the pending package covering approximately 70% of government funding. Republicans, particularly concerned with border policy, have criticized the Biden administration’s approach. While some conservative members have urged rejection of any funding supporting what they deem “disastrous” immigration policies, President Biden has expressed readiness to sign the deal upon passage.
