Brain Implant for Paralysis Patients: Neuralink Begins Recruiting for First Human Trials

Payam Javan: Neuralink begins recruiting for first human trials of brain implant for paralysis patients

Neuralink has received approval from an independent review board and hospital to begin recruiting for the first ever human trials of its brain implant for paralysis patients.
The trial will use a robot to surgically place a wireless brain-computer interface (BCI) implant in a region of the brain that controls movement intention.
The implant is “cosmetically invisible” and will “record and transmit brain signals wirelessly to an app that decodes movement intention.”
The trial is expected to take roughly six years to complete and will test the safety and initial effectiveness of the implant that will allow participants to control a computer cursor or keyboard using just their thoughts.
This is a significant milestone for Neuralink and for the field of brain-computer interfaces. If successful, the trial could pave the way for new treatments for paralysis and other neurological disorders.
