Biden Signs Bill Officially Designating Bald Eagle as National Bird of the United States

Payam Javan:  Joe Biden signed a historic bill on Wednesday that formally designates the bald eagle as the national bird of the United States, rectifying what lawmakers called a longstanding oversight. While the bird has been an emblem of American independence and strength since its adoption for the Great Seal in 1782, the new legislation officially enshrines its status. The law emphasizes the bald eagle’s symbolic significance, describing it as a representation of freedom and a vital element in the cultural and spiritual practices of Indigenous communities. The bird also holds a prominent place in government insignia, including on seals for the President, Congress, and military branches.

The legislation highlights the success of conservation efforts that brought the bald eagle back from near extinction, noting its population has quadrupled since 2009, with 316,700 estimated in the lower 48 states as of 2020. Sponsored by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the bill acknowledges the bird’s unique connection to North America and ensures that its designation will not alter existing federal policies. Lawmakers celebrated the recovery efforts by federal, state, and local governments, as well as nonprofit organizations and individuals, for their role in preserving this iconic species. The bill solidifies the bald eagle’s place as a cherished symbol in American culture and history.
