Biden Administration Extends Work Permits for Certain Illegal Immigrants Amid Processing Delays

Payam Javan: The Biden administration has announced an extension of work permits for certain illegal immigrants, aiming to prevent job loss for hundreds of thousands.

The move, implemented through a temporary final rule by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, extends the validity of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) from 180 days to 540 days. This extension is intended to aid individuals who filed EAD renewal applications on or after Oct. 27, 2023, ensuring they can continue working while their renewals are processed.

Without this extension, approximately 800,000 renewal applicants would risk losing their work permits due to processing delays. The administration emphasizes the importance of maintaining employment authorization and supporting affected businesses. This marks the second time President Biden has granted such an extension, citing processing delays as a reason for the measure.

Additionally, the administration highlights efforts to address the ongoing illegal immigrant crisis at the southern border, with over 617,000 individuals removed or returned since May 12, 2023.
