Pfizer Recalls Nearly 16,000 Bottles of Thyroid Medication Over Potency Concerns

Pfizer is recalling nearly 16,000 bottles of a widely prescribed thyroid medication across the United States after concerns emerged that the product may not meet required potency specifications. The recall involves Levoxyl, a brand-name version of levothyroxine sodium used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. The recall was reported in notices published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall covers 15,815 bottles containing 100 tablets each, with a strength of 175 micrograms. The affected product carries lot number 24W06 and an expiration date of November 30, 2026. An additional recall notice covers 134 bottles containing 1,000 tablets each, from lot number 24W07, with the same expiration date. Both batches are part of the reported recall action.

Levoxyl contains levothyroxine, a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. The medication is commonly prescribed to help restore hormone levels in people with an underactive thyroid. Maintaining the correct dosage is important because insufficient or excessive thyroid hormone replacement can affect a patient’s health and the management of the condition.

The recall highlights the importance of medication quality and consistency, particularly for drugs that require carefully managed dosing. Patients who take Levoxyl should check their medication packaging against the affected lot numbers and consult a pharmacist or healthcare professional if they believe their prescription may be included. Patients should not change or discontinue prescribed thyroid medication without medical advice.

The FDA maintains a public database of drug recalls and safety alerts to provide information about affected products and manufacturer actions. Patients and healthcare providers can consult the agency’s recall resources for additional details. Anyone with a potentially affected bottle should contact their pharmacist or healthcare provider for guidance on identifying the product and determining the appropriate next steps.
