Lionel Richie is taking a temporary break from touring while he recovers from a heart procedure, his representative confirmed Wednesday. The 77-year-old singer underwent a common medical procedure to treat atrial fibrillation, or A-fib, and his representative said the procedure went smoothly. Richie is reportedly doing well and plans to return to the stage after taking some time to recover.

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular or quivering heartbeat that can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke and heart failure. Researchers estimate that more than 10 million people in the United States may have the condition, with the majority of cases occurring among older adults.

Richie has experienced other health-related disruptions to his schedule this year. He postponed two concerts in June after becoming ill, while reports also circulated online in August that he had been hospitalized following a performance in St. Louis. His latest recovery period comes as he prepares for several upcoming performances.

The singer had been scheduled to perform with Earth, Wind & Fire in San Francisco on Sept. 30 and in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 3. According to his official website, Richie is also scheduled to begin his “King of Hearts” residency at the Wynn in Las Vegas in October, with additional shows planned for November.

A four-time Grammy Award winner and Oscar winner, Richie first rose to fame as a member of The Commodores before launching a highly successful solo career. His catalog includes hits such as “Hello,” while he also co-wrote the charity anthem “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson. Richie has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and currently serves as a judge on “American Idol.”
