Payam Javan: The U.S. military announced on Tuesday that it successfully intercepted an Iranian missile barrage targeting American troops in the Middle East, while simultaneously executing joint airstrikes with Saudi Arabia against Iran-backed militia positions in Iraq. The joint operations followed a series of drone attacks and shattered a brief period of relative calm in the region. U.S. Central Command confirmed that all incoming Iranian missiles were neutralized and warned of further military action should American forces or Saudi energy infrastructure face continued threats.
According to U.S. Central Command, American and Saudi fighter aircraft targeted multiple logistics and weapons facilities belonging to Tehran-backed groups in eastern Iraq. The military action was characterized as a direct response to more than 30 aerial drone strikes directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) over a 72-hour period. In its statement, Central Command emphasized that the IRGC and its regional proxies must halt their aggressive activities to avoid triggering additional retaliatory measures.
The Saudi Defense Ministry confirmed its participation in the airstrikes, stating that while the kingdom does not seek a broader regional escalation, it remains prepared to respond decisively to any acts of aggression. This statement came as Saudi air defenses reportedly intercepted several hostile drones attempting to strike oil infrastructure in the country’s eastern region. Additionally, the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen claimed responsibility for targeting a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea, declaring a blockade on Saudi shipping lanes.
In response to allegations that the drone attacks originated from Iraqi territory, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered national security agencies to launch an investigation. The Iraqi military reiterated its commitment to preventing the nation’s territory from being utilized as a launching pad for attacks against neighboring or friendly states. Meanwhile, an umbrella group of Iran-backed Iraqi militias denied any involvement in the drone strikes, dismissing the allegations as fabrications, while Tehran did not immediately issue an official comment on the joint U.S.-Saudi operations.
The military escalation coincided with a high-level meeting in Washington between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, marking their first face-to-face discussion since the outbreak of hostilities with Iran in early 2026. The renewed conflict has also heightened concerns among some U.S. lawmakers and military analysts regarding the Pentagon’s stockpiles of air defense interceptors. However, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell dismissed these concerns, asserting that the U.S. military maintains the necessary capabilities to execute missions as directed.
