A preliminary report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has revealed that former child actress Daveigh Chase, best known for her roles in “Lilo & Stitch” and “The Ring,” died from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The report, which has not yet been finalized, also cited chronic polysubstance use as a significant contributing factor to her passing. Chase, whose legal name was Daveigh Schwallier, passed away in Los Angeles on June 16 at the age of 35, and the official investigation into her death remains open.
The medical examiner’s findings present a different account from the initial statements made by Chase’s boyfriend, Roy Hernandez. Shortly after her death, Hernandez publicly stated that Chase had succumbed to complications from meningitis and a blood infection that resulted in sepsis. He had also launched a crowdfunding campaign to assist with her care and personal expenses, where he described her struggles with health issues, malnutrition, and personal hardships in her later years.
Born in Las Vegas and raised in Oregon, Chase began her career as a child performer before achieving widespread recognition in the early 2000s. In 2002, she voiced the character of Lilo in Disney’s animated hit “Lilo & Stitch” and provided the English voice for Chihiro in the Oscar-winning film “Spirited Away.” She also gained prominence in the horror genre for her performance as Samara Morgan in the 2002 film “The Ring,” a role that earned her an MTV Movie Award.
In addition to her voice acting and horror roles, Chase had a versatile career in television and independent film. She appeared as Rhonda Volmer in 32 episodes of the HBO drama series “Big Love” and held roles in notable projects such as “Donnie Darko,” “ER,” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has stated that a complete and final report will be released to the public once the ongoing investigation is officially concluded.
