Payam Javan: President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Vice President JD Vance will visit Azerbaijan and Armenia next month in a bid to reinforce a peace agreement signed by the two countries in Washington last August. The visit is intended to consolidate diplomatic gains following the end of nearly four decades of conflict between the two South Caucasus neighbors.
According to Trump, the trip will also focus on expanding U.S. engagement in the region through agreements on peaceful nuclear cooperation, semiconductor production, and the sale of U.S.-made defense equipment. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for honoring the peace deal and described the agreement as part of his broader vision for “International Peace and Prosperity.”
The August accord, brokered by the Trump administration, required both Armenia and Azerbaijan to renounce territorial claims, halt the use of force, and adhere to international law, formally ending hostilities over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Since then, cooperation has increased, including Armenia’s decision to connect its energy grid with Azerbaijan’s to facilitate electricity trade under a U.S.-backed initiative.
Trump has repeatedly taken credit for ending multiple global conflicts during his presidency and has portrayed the Armenia-Azerbaijan deal as a model of his “America First” diplomacy. Both countries’ leaders, along with several others worldwide, have reportedly nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, while Azerbaijan and Armenia continue to deepen ties with Washington in energy, nuclear, and defense sectors.
