Payam Javan: A deadly fire swept through a crowded bar during New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, killing around 40 people and injuring at least 115, many of them seriously. The blaze broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. at a venue popular with young people, as hundreds gathered to mark the start of the new year. Authorities described the incident as one of the worst tragedies in Switzerland’s recent history.
Officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, though there is no indication it was a deliberate attack. Initial reports of an explosion were later played down, with prosecutors stressing that no suspects have been identified and no arrests made. Investigators have yet to fully access the wreckage, and determining the bar’s occupancy and maximum capacity will form part of the inquiry.
Identifying the victims is expected to take several days due to the severity of burns, with forensic teams relying on dental and DNA records. Victims are believed to be from multiple countries, complicating the process, while neighboring states including France, Germany, and Italy have offered medical assistance. Several injured were transferred to specialist burn units in Swiss and foreign hospitals.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the alpine resort, which is normally bustling with winter tourists and is set to host major international sporting events next year. Emergency services described chaotic scenes as ambulances and helicopters transported the wounded, while residents and visitors gathered to lay flowers and light candles near the site. Swiss leaders called for unity and caution in the days ahead, as the country mourns a devastating start to the new year.
