Payam Javan: A 33-year-old man died Sunday afternoon while in custody at the Elmwood Correctional Complex in Milpitas, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies discovered the man unresponsive in his housing unit at 2:56 p.m., prompting an immediate medical response from jail staff. CPR was initiated as personnel worked to revive him.
Emergency responders from the Milpitas Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services arrived at 3:09 p.m. Despite continued lifesaving efforts, the man was pronounced dead at 3:31 p.m. Authorities have not released his name pending notification of his family.
Sheriff’s detectives have launched an investigation into the in-custody death. Based on early findings, officials say there is no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances involved in the incident. The man had been in custody since February 14, 2025, facing multiple charges connected to San Jose Police Department cases.
The Sheriff’s Office is following standard protocol for in-custody deaths and is working with the District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner to determine the cause of death.
