PFLP Leaders Killed in Rare Israeli Strike on Beirut

Payam Javan: In recent Israeli air strikes, key leaders of Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) were killed in Lebanon. Hamas confirmed the death of Fateh Sherif Abu el-Amin, their leader in Lebanon, along with his family in a strike on their home in the Palestinian refugee camp of el-Buss in Tyre. Abu el-Amin was also the president of the Teachers’ Union for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. The PFLP announced that three of their leaders were killed in separate Israeli strikes in Beirut’s southern Kola district, marking Israel’s first air raid within the city.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported over 1,000 deaths and 6,000 injuries in recent attacks, with a million people displaced from their homes. Israeli forces have continued operations, targeting Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley, aiming to neutralize threats to northern Israel. Israeli strikes have killed several top Hezbollah leaders, including Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and have intensified following incursions into northern Israel. Nabil Qaouk, a senior Hezbollah commander, was also eliminated as part of Israel’s effort to curb the group’s influence.

In addition to Lebanon, Israel’s air defenses intercepted several threats, including missiles launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen and aerial objects over the Upper Galilee and northern waters. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) also conducted strikes in Gaza, targeting Hamas command centers located within civilian infrastructure, accusing the group of using schools as operational bases. Israel maintains that its strikes are aimed at securing the safety of its northern regions, ensuring the return of displaced residents, and enforcing the 2006 U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a demilitarized zone in southern Lebanon.
