Payam Javan: The U.S. subsidiary of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD and its CEO, Stella Li, have been significant contributors to Democratic political campaigns and organizations over recent years. According to a review by the Daily Caller News Foundation, BYD Americas and Li have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates and groups, including substantial sums to the Democratic National Committee and various 2024 re-election efforts for President Joe Biden. Notably, California Governor Gavin Newsom received around $60,000 from BYD and Li between 2018 and 2023, amidst controversy over a no-bid contract awarded to BYD during the pandemic.
BYD Americas’ contributions have extended to various California politicians and entities, including former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the California Democratic Party. The company also supported the failed Proposition 6 opposition and local politicians like Michael Anotovich, who directed funds toward BYD. This financial support has often coincided with actions or policies that favored BYD, such as steering municipal clean bus testing funds to the company.
Despite these connections, BYD faces scrutiny and legislative barriers in the U.S. due to security concerns. Congress has enacted measures restricting the Pentagon from purchasing BYD batteries and has flagged the company in national defense legislation. BYD’s global expansion, driven by China’s Belt and Road Initiative, underscores its geopolitical significance, which may influence U.S. policy and market dynamics. The company is exploring new avenues to enter the U.S. EV market, potentially through Mexico, as it adapts to evolving regulatory environments and market conditions.
