The attacks unfolded in a single morning but left a decades-long impact on American society. Al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners, crashing two into New York’s World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon near Washington and a fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members attempted to regain control of the aircraft. The attacks destroyed the World Trade Center’s twin towers and severely damaged the Pentagon.
At Ground Zero in New York, relatives will again read the names of those killed, with moments of silence marking key points in the morning’s timeline. This year’s ceremony will also include a new silent tribute to people who were exposed to toxic dust from the collapsing towers and later died from cancer and other illnesses. The long-term health effects of the attacks remain a significant part of the anniversary’s legacy.
The consequences of 9/11 extended far beyond the immediate loss of life. The U.S.-led war on terrorism resulted in the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, expanded surveillance and intelligence powers, new banking regulations and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan in 2011, while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, accused of helping mastermind the attacks, remains awaiting trial more than two decades after his capture.
President Donald Trump, who was in New York on Sept. 11, 2001, is scheduled to attend the anniversary ceremony at the Pentagon, while Vice President JD Vance is expected at the National Sept. 11 Memorial in New York and other administration officials will attend events in Pennsylvania. Remembrances will take place nationwide, including volunteer activities organized under Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. For many Americans, the anniversary remains both a public commemoration and a deeply personal moment of reflection.
