UN Nuclear Chief: Iran Could Resume Uranium Enrichment in Months

Payam Javan: The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, stated on June 29, 2025, that Iran could potentially restart enriching uranium within months, despite recent U.S. and Israeli airstrikes that caused significant damage to its nuclear facilities. In an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Grossi contradicted President Donald Trump’s claim that the strikes had “completely obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program, noting that while the damage to sites like Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan was severe, Iran’s technological expertise and remaining infrastructure could enable it to resume enrichment quickly. Iran’s stockpile of 408.6 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium, potentially enough for nine nuclear bombs if further refined, remains a concern, with questions lingering about whether some was relocated before the attacks.

Grossi emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions, urging renewed talks to ensure Iran’s nuclear activities remain peaceful, as Tehran insists its program is for civilian purposes only. However, Iran’s parliament recently voted to suspend IAEA cooperation, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected Grossi’s request to inspect damaged sites, complicating oversight. Trump, who threatened further strikes if Iran resumes enrichment at concerning levels, expressed confidence that the attacks eliminated key nuclear capabilities, a claim disputed by intercepted Iranian communications suggesting less extensive damage. With U.S.-Iran negotiations set to resume, the situation remains tense as Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the region’s stability hang in the balance.
