U.S. Senate Passes Government Funding Bill, Avoids Shutdown

Payam Javan: The U.S. Senate passed a government funding bill on March 14, narrowly avoiding a shutdown by approving the legislation in a 54–46 vote. The bill, which had previously passed the House, now awaits President Donald Trump’s signature. While some Democrats initially backed the measure, only Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Angus King supported its final passage. The bill extends funding through September 30, boosting defense spending by $6 billion while cutting non-defense expenses by $13 billion. All proposed amendments, including a provision to shorten the bill’s duration to 30 days, were rejected.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s support for the bill sparked controversy within the Democratic Party. Despite previously opposing the measure, Schumer justified his reversal by arguing that rejecting the bill would grant Trump more power during a shutdown. His decision faced criticism from progressive Democrats and House leaders, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calling it a “slap in the face” to the party’s base. Meanwhile, Trump praised Schumer’s move, calling it a “smart decision” that prevents national instability. The debate over the bill has deepened divisions within the Democratic Party ahead of future budget negotiations.
