Trump Pushes Pharmaceutical Tariffs, Open to Trade Deals Ahead of April 2 Plan

Payam Javan: President Donald Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One on Friday, March 29, 2025, reaffirmed his administration’s plans to impose tariffs on imported pharmaceutical goods and signaled flexibility in negotiating auto and reciprocal tariffs with other nations. En route to Palm Beach, Florida, Trump told reporters that many countries have expressed interest in striking deals to mitigate the impact of his proposed reciprocal tariff plan, set to be unveiled on April 2. While open to negotiations, Trump emphasized that the U.S. would no longer tolerate being “taken advantage of” after decades of unfavorable trade practices, though he noted that any agreements would likely come after the initial tariff rollout.

Trump also previewed forthcoming tariffs targeting the pharmaceutical industry, aimed at encouraging domestic production, though he offered no specifics on rates or exemptions for life-saving drugs. The announcement follows his recent decision to impose 25 percent tariffs on imported cars and parts, effective April 2, which he has called America’s “Liberation Day.” During the turbulent landing, Trump briefly addressed his positive call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney but avoided past provocative suggestions about Canada’s status. Meanwhile, some automakers, including Hyundai with a $20 billion U.S. investment, are already adjusting plans to bolster American manufacturing in response to the looming trade measures.
