Trump Hints at Possible Pardon for Assange During Podcast Interview

Donald Trump stated that he would give “very serious consideration” to pardoning WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange if he wins a second term in November. During an interview with podcaster Tim Pool, Trump suggested that pardoning Assange is under consideration.

The interview was recorded before Trump’s speech at the Libertarian National Convention, where he also mentioned commuting the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, who is serving life in prison for operating the Silk Road darknet market.

Assange faces charges in the U.S. for allegedly helping Army analyst Bradley Manning obtain and disclose classified information. The U.S. authorities seek to try Assange on 18 charges under the Espionage Act, accusing him of endangering national security and lives.

Last week, Assange was granted permission by the High Court in London to appeal his extradition to the U.S. over freedom of speech and nationality issues. His supporters claim that extradition could result in a 175-year prison sentence and have highlighted the severe impact of his prolonged legal battles on his health.
