Trump Announces NATO-Funded Weapons Deal for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

Payam Javan: President Donald Trump announced on July 10 that he has brokered a new agreement with NATO under which the United States will supply weapons to Ukraine, with the alliance fully reimbursing the costs. Trump stated the deal, finalized during last month’s NATO summit, ensures Ukraine’s defense while maintaining U.S. military readiness, with NATO subsequently transferring the weapons to Kyiv. This development follows a brief suspension of some U.S. arms shipments to Ukraine on July 2, which the Pentagon cited as a “capability reassessment.”

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed discussions with Trump and reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to Ukraine, though he did not specifically confirm the details of Trump’s described weapons deal. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed it is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine at Trump’s direction. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has continued to press for more Patriot missile systems, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated the Trump administration is exploring “creative ways” to provide further air defenses, including potentially redirecting Patriot batteries intended for other nations.
