The state’s gas tax is set to rise on July 1

Payam Javan: After legislative leaders rejected Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to delay the hike to help drivers cope with increasing gas costs at the pump, the state’s gas tax is set to rise on July 1. Senate Bill 1, which was signed into law in 2017 and gradually raises the fuel excise tax each year, is to blame for this automatic increase.

In March, Gov. Gavin Newsom suggested a plan that would provide a $400 debit card rebate per registered vehicle owner, with a maximum of $800 for drivers with multiple vehicles. Democrats in the legislature, on the other hand, did not want to connect relief to automobile ownership and instead suggested a scheme that would provide $200 in relief to individuals earning up to $125,000 or joint filers earning up to $250,000.

California legislature introduced a bill on Tuesday that would prohibit the sale of single-use tobacco products to address environmental concerns
