The Final Golden State Stimulus Checks Are Being Sent Out

Payam Javan: According to the California Franchise Tax Board’s schedule, the final batch of Golden State Stimulus II checks is slated to be mailed out on Tuesday.

According to FTB’s website, the payments will be made to eligible applicants who live in areas with ZIP codes that end in 928-999. Once mailed, the checks can take up to three weeks to arrive.

In late August, California began awarding expanded GSS II payments of up to $1,100, and the funds have already been distributed to millions of residents who qualify for the program.

California residents who filed a 2020 state income tax return, earned between $1 and $75,000 last year,  have a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and weren’t claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer.

It’s still unclear whether the state will re-enact the program this year and offer residents with another round of direct payments. California’s budget surplus is expected to surpass its constitutional limit for the second year in a row, implying that the money will have to be returned to taxpayers in some form.

While Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed budget did not include any further Golden State payments, when asked about the possibility of future stimulus checks, he did not rule out the possibility. The governor’s proposed budget is for the 2018 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
