Terror Attack During Hanukkah Celebrations Shocks Australia

Payam Javan: Australian authorities have officially classified a deadly attack at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach as a terrorist incident, New South Wales Police confirmed on Sunday. The assault, carried out by two attackers, left 11 people dead, including one of the assailants. The incident occurred at one of Australia’s most popular coastal destinations and coincided with public celebrations marking the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, raising serious concerns about a targeted attack against the Jewish community.

Police responded swiftly after reports of gunfire and multiple casualties. Officials confirmed that 10 civilians were killed in the shooting, while one attacker was fatally shot by police. The second suspect, who sustained critical injuries, has been taken into custody. Authorities also revealed that an explosive device was discovered inside a vehicle linked to the attackers, further reinforcing the terrorism designation. Social media footage circulating online showed scenes of panic as beachgoers fled the area.

The timing of the attack, during Hanukkah celebrations near Bondi Beach, has intensified speculation that the Jewish community was deliberately targeted. Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the incident as a terrorist act, stating that “despicable terrorists” attacked Jews who had gathered to light the first Hanukkah candle. Alex Ryvchin, a senior figure at the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, described the event as shocking and beyond comprehension.

New South Wales Police said investigations are ongoing and urged the public to avoid the affected area. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities or full motivations of the attackers. The tragedy has reignited national concerns over public safety in Australia, coming 11 years after the deadly Lindt Café hostage crisis in Sydney, which similarly left a lasting impact on the country’s sense of security.
