Payam Javan: In response to a nationwide spike in Hyundai vehicle thefts, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is distributing 100 free steering wheel locks to eligible Hyundai owners. This initiative, supported by Hyundai Motor Company, aims to curb the rising tide of auto thefts in the region. The locks are available at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters in San Jose, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., until supplies are depleted.
The surge in thefts is linked to certain Hyundai models lacking engine immobilizers, a vulnerability highlighted by viral social media videos. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, Hyundai vehicle thefts have skyrocketed by over 1,000% since 2020. Sheriff Bob Jonsen emphasized the program’s goal, stating, “These steering wheel locks offer a simple but effective way for residents to deter theft and protect their vehicles.”
Santa Clara County reported over 800 vehicle thefts between 2023 and 2024, with Alum Rock and Burbank neighborhoods experiencing the highest rates. The Sheriff’s Office noted a slight increase in auto thefts in unincorporated areas, rising from 331 incidents in 2023 to 342 in 2024. The free locks serve as a temporary deterrent while owners await permanent software updates or repairs from Hyundai dealerships.
To qualify for a free lock, Hyundai owners must provide proof of vehicle registration, reside in Santa Clara County, and claim a device on a first-come, first-served basis. Owners are also encouraged to contact their local Hyundai dealership to check eligibility for security upgrades. The program underscores the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to public safety and community outreach.
