In an August op-ed and multiple public statements, Mahan urged Newsom to redirect his attention from partisan online exchanges toward “solving real-world problems.” He argued that while the governor’s digital presence may bolster his national profile ahead of a potential 2028 presidential bid, it does little to improve the daily lives of Californians. Mahan also criticized Sacramento’s lack of funding for Proposition 36 — a voter-approved measure aimed at tackling retail theft and drug use — calling the state’s inaction a failure of leadership.

Newsom’s advisers have downplayed the conflict, with spokesperson Bob Salladay telling Politico that the governor’s office is “not at war with the mayor” and emphasizing that “we’re all in this together.” However, several Democratic strategists close to Newsom have expressed frustration with Mahan’s blunt criticism, suggesting that the San Jose mayor is seeking political attention by challenging the governor so openly.
