Raducanu, the first British woman to win a Grand Slam trophy

Payam Javan: In only her second attempt at a Grand Slam competition, unseeded British youngster Emma Raducanu went from qualifier to champion at the US Open.

She defeated Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the final at Flushing Meadows on Saturday, becoming the first player in the professional era to advance from the preliminary qualifying rounds to a major title.

She is ranked 150th in the world, won all twenty sets she played in New York—six in qualification and 14 in the main draw—and is the first woman to win the singles title without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2014.

This was the first major final between two teenagers since Williams, 17, defeated Martina Hingis, 18, in the 1999 US Open, and the first between two unseeded women since Williams, 17, defeated Martina Hingis, 18, in the 1999 U.S. Open.

Raducanu broke to go up 4–2 in the second set, held for 5–2 and was two times a point away from winning the game. But she squandered both opportunities by hitting the net with groundstrokes.
She then fell on the court while chasing a ball to her backhand side, bloodying her left knee and serving for the match at 5–3. Fernandez, a 19-year-old left-hander from Canada ranked 73rd, talked to chair umpire Marijana Veljovic after a four-minute pause.

She avoided a couple of breakpoints when the match resumed, then converted on her third chance to close it out with a 108 mph ace. She collapsed on her back and covered her face with both hands after dropping the racket.

Since Virginia Wade’s victory at Wimbledon in 1977, Raducanu is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam trophy.

She is also the youngest female athlete to win a major since Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon at the age of 17 in 2004.
